Embodied Counseling

"An embodiment practice is a method of using the unique sensations of our body as a tool to develop awareness, stay present, self-regulate, feel whole, find balance, feel connected, know yourself, love yourself, and feel empowered."

What is it?

Embodied counseling uses body practices intertwined with traditional talk therapy, weaving in research backed therapeutic yoga techniques such as breathwork, movement, and mindfulness to regulate and balance the nervous system, process emotions while moving energy in the body, and address symptoms from the inside out; using embodiment to bring awareness to the various levels of the self. Counseling sessions include as much embodiment as the client would like and is comfortable with. You give permission to all things discussed, processed, and held. We collaborate to work alongside you at your pace, as we know that you have the tools to heal within you and we are simply a support to get you to where you want to be.

How does it benefit me?

Stress is felt in the body and therefor healing requires us to listen to what our body is saying. Think about a time when you cried and felt much more calm after or sang a song at the top of your lungs and immediately felt a release? When combined with traditional talk therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), this approach to counseling focuses on staying present, non judgment, and acknowledgement and acceptance, all which lead individuals to increased self regulation, a heightened sense of wellbeing, and a greater sense of feeling whole.

What should I expect in a session?

Session will begin by orienting and bringing awareness to the present moment. Expect to utilize breathwork in sessions to balance the nervous system, move through therapeutic yoga poses (asanas) to move energy in the body to assist improvement in mental health, utilize sound such as mantras or humming, and engage in guided meditation. The client determines how much or how little will be incorporated into talk therapy sessions, but rest assured, the WHOLE body will be addressed in the healing process. Our counseling involves taking notice of any bodily sensations, tensions, and heartbeats through dialogue, momevement, etc., which is all counselor guided and client decided.

Will it interfere with my religion?

Although yoga has its roots in religion, it's not in itself a religion and can be better understood as a spiritual practice of philosophy that the body, mind, and spirit are connected. People of all religious backgrounds engage in the practice of yoga, including those with no religion.
